Surbiton High Girls’ Prep Forest School

Our Forest School allows Girls’ Prep School pupils to engage with the natural environment as part of the curriculum.

In line with our school motto, ‘May Love Always Lead Us,’ we aim to nurture individuals to be caring and show concern for living things and the natural environment. Our Forest School programme offers individuals the opportunity to become confident risk-takers, try new things, and develop their ability to play in a fun, inspirational, creative, and stimulating environment.

A unique feature of our Forest School is the collaboration between the Boys’ Prep and Girls’ Prep Schools. Each year group participates in one joint session per term, allowing pupils to engage with peers across both Prep Schools. These combined sessions are a wonderful opportunity for children to develop friendships, work together on joint projects, and learn from each other in a shared natural setting.

Surbiton High School’s Forest School Programme

Our Forest School programme is led by Level 3 trained teachers, Miss Baldwin and Mrs Roberts. The curriculum focuses on:

  • Bushcraft skills: Teaching children essential outdoor skills such as fire lighting and tool use.
  • Teamwork and problem-solving: Encouraging collaborative projects and critical thinking.
  • Risk-taking: Providing safe opportunities for children to challenge themselves.
  • Outdoor learning: Integrating nature into the educational experience to foster a love of the environment.

 Activities and Workshops

We offer a variety of activities and workshops, including:

  • Nature exploration: Guided walks and scavenger hunts to discover local flora and fauna.
  • Bushcraft workshops: Sessions on fire lighting, shelter building, and tool safety.
  • Creative projects: Using natural materials to create art and craft projects.
  • Team-building exercises: Group challenges and games to build cooperation and communication skills.

 Location

Our Forest School is set in the beautiful and expansive Hinchley Wood Sports Ground, a perfect environment for children to explore and connect with nature. The woodland space features various zones where pupils can engage in activities that promote outdoor learning, creativity, and physical activity. The Enchanted Woodland pathway, a highlight of our site, invites children to embark on nature trails, search for fairies, and discover enchanting toadstools along the way.
