The Aim and Goal:
The fight for a one-million-pound investment
Year 12 business A-level students were separated into five teams to create a male fragrance business, with a goal to secure a £1 million investment from a panel of expert judges for 49% of the business.
The judging panel they faced were historically made up of a diverse range of CEOs, entrepreneurs, and marketing executives.
The five teams:
1) Ombrá – Keira, Phoebe, Izzy T, Frankie, Sadie
2) Summit – Avye, Sam, Emily, Poppy
3) Echo – Elsie, Arwenna, Natalia, Claire
4) Arome – Izzy F, Fehintola, Alice, Alara
5) Limitless – Jenna, Emmie, Amber, Isis, Leewon
On International Women’s Day, we were able to represent women in business to foster diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace!
The final results came in, and the pressure started to be felt by many people. Honourable mentions went to both Ombrá and Arome, but team Limitless came out with the £1 million investment for their fragrance company to expand their brand further in the market and differentiate further from competitors!
The first step was to bid for a fragrance based on scent preferences. One team even bid £400,000 and had to negotiate and on a lower price! Creating a business presentation was the next step, a high-pressure task, especially when involving critical insights and last-minute preparations. It was important that we included gaps in the market that our companies can exploit, strengths and weaknesses.
As we prepared and finalised our presentations, we reflected on the importance of what we have learned in this process. We recognised that understanding competition is about how your unique value proposition can stand out, reinforcing the importance of effective marketing and contributing towards economic growth through consumer engagement.
We knew impressions we make on our audience can influence perceptions of our company, so we made an effort to communicate well with the panel with a professional uptake!
