We were thrilled to welcome Professor Dougal Jerram, an award-winning geologist and Earth scientist, to our school for an exciting and immersive session on volcanoes. Known as ‘Dr Volcano’ from his television appearances, he captivated the girls with his deep knowledge and dynamic explanations, bringing the science of eruptions to life in a truly unforgettable way.
During his talk, he explained how the build-up of gas pressure and the viscosity of magma, determine the power of an eruption. The presence of a rock cap at the top of a volcano can intensify the pressure, leading to a much more explosive event. To demonstrate this, Dr Volcano staged a thrilling classroom experiment, launching lava bombs—Coco Pops!—across the room, much to the delight of the girls.
The class was fascinated by his firsthand experiences of real volcanoes, including his incredible stories and stunning photographs of active craters he has explored. The session deepened their understanding of volcanoes and left them inspired by the wonders of Earth science.
A huge thank you to Dr Volcano for such an engaging and memorable visit!
