INTERVIEW/SMALL-GROUP DISCUSSION

The second stage of our entry process, after the entrance exam, will be an interview/small group discussion with up to three candidates; this will allow us to meet with all candidates to provide a holistic overview of each child. We will be able to get to know your daughter better through this short, friendly conversation with Senior members of our team and it will provide an opportunity to discuss candidates’ motivations for joining Surbiton High School and their wider interests and hobbies, as well as the opportunity to engage in some friendly academic discussion. Your daughter does not need to prepare for the interview.

The interviews will take place Surbiton High School throughout December and early January.

You will find below a short list of frequently asked questions regarding the interview/small-group discussion. Further information regarding this stage of the process will be sent following the completion of the entrance exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my daughter attend with other children she knows?

We recommend that children do not attend intentionally with a friend, as it can have an impact on their performance and lessen their focus.

Why has the interview process changed from one-on-one to small-group interviews?

The group interview format allows candidates to demonstrate their communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills in a more dynamic environment. It provides insight into how candidates interact with others, which is an important aspect of their development.

Will my child still receive equal attention in a group setting?

Yes, we ensure that all candidates are given equal opportunities to contribute during the discussion. The interviewers are experienced at managing group dynamics to ensure that every pupil has a chance to speak and share their thoughts.

What if my child is shy or introverted? Will they be at a disadvantage?

No, we recognise that every child is different, and our interviewers are skilled at creating a comfortable atmosphere for all candidates. We take personality differences into account and will ensure that each candidate has an opportunity to express themselves fully.

How are group dynamics evaluated in the interview?

The group interview assesses not only individual abilities, but also how candidates work with others, listen, and engage in thoughtful dialogue. While group interaction is considered, individual strengths and potential remain a key focus of the evaluation.
