‘The Edge’ Day at Westminster School

Posted: 27th March 2025

On this trip at Westminster School, we enjoyed a range of talks including aspects like linguistics, resources and energy usage. I really enjoyed how all these topics were linked back to ‘The Edge’, despite being based on different fields. In my opinion, this helped the event to be engaging for people with any interests, whilst maintaining links between all the lectures.

For example, in the energy usage talk, we explored how humanity must recoil from the edge, before our planet becomes inhabitable. In addition, the science of linguistics talk covered how ‘The Edge’ of language is constantly expanding because words gain more connotations and trigger different feelings as humanity develops.

I also particularly enjoyed the talk from two Westminster School sixth formers, on the topic of Donald Trump’s desire for resources. It was very interesting to understand the reasoning behind his want for nations rich in resources including Ukraine and Greenland, and also why the want for expansion into these countries has caused so much conflict.
