This week, Surbiton High Girls’ Prep fully embraced the spirit of ‘Carnival of the Animals’, diving into a creative exploration of Camille Saint-Saëns’ vibrant and playful musical suite. The pupils honed their poetry, storytelling, and dance skills, bringing the various animals to life in imaginative ways.
‘Carnival of the Animals’ is a colourful composition designed to musically depict a range of creatures, with each of its 14 movements capturing the distinct characteristics of a different animal. For example, the ‘Aquarium’ movement creates a shimmering, fluid atmosphere, evoking the peaceful motion of fish swimming in water, while ‘The Elephant’ is slow and heavy, reflecting the lumbering gait of the animal.
The highlight of the week was when the girls performed their original poems in assembly, each piece inspired by the animals in Saint-Saëns’ suite. Some captured the regal power of ‘The Lion’ in bold, rhythmic verses, while others echoed the graceful, flowing melody of ‘The Swan’ with delicate, lyrical words. Alongside their poetry, the pupils crafted intricate origami animals and performed dances that mirrored the movements of the creatures.
Additionally, pupils participated in a Story Slam, sharing imaginative tales based on the ‘Carnival of the Animals’, further showcasing their creativity and flair. It was a wonderful celebration of the music’s lively charm and the pupils’ boundless imagination.
