On Friday, 26 January 2025, the Year 8 and 9 Academic Scholars from Surbiton High School visited Kingston Liberal Synagogue to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. The trip provided a profound learning experience, offering pupils a deeper understanding of the varied perspectives of those affected during the war.
A poignant highlight of the day was a talk given by a guest speaker, who shared the harrowing story of his mother’s experiences during the war. Despite the heartbreaking nature of the narrative, it was a powerful reminder of the resilience required to live with hope in the face of unimaginable hardship.
Following the speaker’s presentation, pupils were divided into groups to work on a project that involved creating a timeline of the laws enacted against Jewish people during the war.
The day concluded with a solemn candle-lighting ceremony, honouring those who perished in genocides. The visit not only enhanced the pupils’ historical knowledge but also offered a moment for reflection on the importance of remembrance and the enduring value of hope over fear.
