The Girls’ Prep recently travelled to the King’s Centre. On our arrival, Keren from the Insight team immediately welcomed us. The Christmas Journey then began with the girls sharing what they were most excited about during the festive season. Their responses ranged from anticipation for decorating their homes to the gifts they hoped to receive.
The girls were then directed to the little booklets prepared for them, and started by jotting down their three wishes for Christmas. They were invited to embark on an imaginative journey back in time using a sound effect-filled time travel machine.
The story commenced from a point of emptiness, exploring how God created all things. Mary shared her experiences with the girls and then the Angel Gabriel unexpectedly appeared to deliver a very important message.
Next, a scribe introduced the scene at the stable, where puppets depicted the narrative. They explained how everyone had to return to their birthplace, which led Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. With no other place available, they found refuge in the stable amid the animals. The birth of baby Jesus was described, highlighting the visitors he had already received.
The wise men then made their entrance. They brought special gifts for the newborn, showcasing gold, frankincense and myrrh. They explained that when frankincense is burned, it releases a unique aroma. They also presented myrrh, discussing its uses and why it was an unusual yet significant gift for the baby. The wise men elaborated on how Jesus was honoured with gold, recognising him as a king. They then shared their quest to find the star, emphasising the urgency of their journey once they spotted it.
The tableau concluded with a song that beautifully encapsulated the Christmas story. Then, the girls returned to their time machines and arrived back to the present day and Derek’s “house”. Here, he had arranged a Christmas scene in his living room complete with a tree. He conversed with the girls about their future aspirations and explained Jesus’s special purpose for coming into the world.
Afterwards, the girls continued working on their booklets, writing down three things they had observed or learned during this journey. We were generously provided with craft materials and delightful Christmas books to bring back to School.
We are immensely grateful to the volunteers and staff at Insight who made this experience possible and truly memorable for us all.
