Surbiton High School held its first SCOPE Day of the academic year on 10 October, with pupils engaging in various activities focused on personal development and well-being.
The theme, “Exploring Life,” included keynote speaker Lucy Shepherd, a renowned explorer, who shared her inspiring journey. Year groups participated in activities ranging from team-building exercises to important discussions on resilience, confidence, and boundaries. Highlights included talks from experts such as Lorraine Lee and Debi Steven, with various workshops tailored to each year group.
- Year 7 received a personal letter from their parents titled ‘A Time When I Was Brave’, encouraging them to reflect on moments of courage. They worked together on creating bravery shields and engaged in a team-building activity with Year 8.
- Year 8 heard from child development expert Lorraine Lee, learning to build confidence and self-awareness. They also created positive mantras for resilience and led the joint House activity with Year 7.
- Year 9 listened to Debi Steven, CEO of Action Breaks Silence, about the importance of values and boundaries. They participated in collaborative discussions on overcoming adversity.
- Year 10 focused on examining the lives of inspirational figures, with further insight from Debi Steven, who spoke about her work to create a world free of male violence against women.
- Year 11 delved into education on ending Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), becoming active bystanders through a series of workshops. They also enjoyed a calming yoga Nidra session and reflected on overcoming adversity with their form groups.
- Year 12 participated in a UCAS and Careers talk led by Mr McDermott, Director of Careers, and attended workshops on sleep habits with Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, a sleep expert and wellness coach. They also took part in a jewellery-making session.
- Year 13 had a powerful talk from John Hoskison, a former professional golfer who spoke about his life-changing experience following a drink-driving incident. Year 13 also participated in a breath workshop from School Breathe and heard Dr Nerina Ramlakhan speak about strategies for improving sleep.
SCOPE Day provided pupils with the opportunity to reflect, develop resilience, and engage with challenging yet important topics, ensuring a positive and enriching start to the academic year.
