Surbiton High Parent’s Solo Cycle from London to Africa in Aid of Charity

Posted: 8th October 2024

We are thrilled to share an inspiring story from one of our Surbiton High School parents. Mr Makan, father of Zaara in Year 8, is currently embarking on an extraordinary solo cycle from London to Morocco, raising funds for three impactful charities: Crisis, ActionAid, and the 2nd Mortlake Scout Group. His journey, which began on 19 September, will cover approximately 1,500 miles and aims to raise over £10,000.

Mr Makan’s challenge began with an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo, France, followed by a gruelling cycle down the western side of France, through the Pyrenees, and into Spain. Despite not being a regular cyclist and facing the physical toll of climbing hills equivalent to 1.5 times the height of Mount Everest, Mr Makan is determined to reach Tangier, Morocco, by mid to late October. He cycles around 50 to 60 miles daily, carrying his tent, tools, and essentials in his panniers.

A leader at the 2nd Mortlake Scout Group, Mr Makan embodies the Scout motto “Be prepared,” drawing on perseverance and resourcefulness to conquer challenges along the way. Not only is this a personal endeavour, but it is also a fundraising mission for causes close to his heart. Crisis, which helps homeless individuals, ActionAid, focusing on women and girls in developing countries, and his local Scout Group, all stand to benefit from this incredible journey.

Despite modest beginnings, including purchasing an £80 bike and hastily preparing for the trip, Mr Makan has persevered and is now halfway through his month-long adventure. His dedication and spirit serve as a powerful example of how perseverance and a desire to make a difference can drive remarkable achievements.

We encourage the entire Surbiton High School community to support Mr Makan’s journey and the causes he is fundraising for. Donations can be made via his fundraising page: London to Morocco Solo Cycle.

We wish Mr Makan the best of luck as he continues his remarkable journey, and we look forward to celebrating his arrival in Morocco.
