On Wednesday 25 September, the U11s from Surbiton High Girls’ Prep had an early start travelling to Oxford for the Hockey IAPS Tournament.
The first game in the pool stage was a tough encounter against St Pirian’s with a 3-0 loss. The team brushed themselves off to draw against our local rivals, Holy Cross 0-0. The team had much of the play with the Holy Cross goalkeeper making some crucial saves. The 1-0 win against Ashfold saw the team dominate with numerous chances. The goal came from a superb right-side attack, where the ball was crossed in for Molly to finish with a one touch slap to goal.
Having lost the first game, the team just missed out on a cup place, by coming third in their pool. This sent the team through to the Plate Competition where they played some wonderful hockey to win the quarter-final game 4-0. Molly, Amelia, Amelie and Annabelle all contributed to the score sheet, demonstrating a strong team performance.
The encounter against Swanbourne School was nail-biting with a 1-1 draw at full time resulting in extra time. There was nothing more left to say other than for the team to do their bit if they wanted to play in the Plate Final. Ten seconds into extra time the team made four connecting passes to goal, with a clinical finish in front of goal by Molly to win the game 2-1!
Alas, the team faced Holy Cross in the final of the plate. By this point the team were in their groove. They applied a lot of pressure and made the opposition goalkeeper work hard. Amelia and Emily took their chances in front of goal for the team to win 2-0!
Congratulations to the U11s for winning the IAPS Plate Competition. We are proud of the way they conducted themselves and displayed resilience to bounce back after the first defeat.
Team: Molly, Amelia, Amelie, Emily, Ella, Annabelle, Eva, Orla, Megan, Clodagh
