The transition to a new academic year is a significant milestone, filled with both excitement and potential anxieties. Surbiton High School shares insights and advice for pupils and parents, particularly focusing on Year 7, Year 11, and Year 13, to help them navigate these important stages with confidence.

Year 7: Finding Wings and Feet

As children enter Year 7, parents often grapple with the challenge of loosening their reins. It is important to approach this with confidence, knowing that Surbiton High School provides a supportive environment where pupils can build independence while knowing that help is readily available. Pupils are encouraged to navigate their schedules and explore new subjects and teachers, learning from small mistakes in a safe and nurturing environment.

Exploration and Experimentation

Surbiton High School offers a diverse co-curricular programme. Parents are encouraged to let their children explore various activities during the initial weeks. This approach allows pupils to discover their passions before narrowing down their commitments. The School’s environment provides ample opportunities for pupils to try different activities, helping them to find their interests and strengths. On 9 and 10 September, pupils have the opportunity to learn more about the School’s co-curricular programme by attending the co-curricular programme.

Years 11 & 13: Balancing Challenges and Well-being

Pupils in Year 11 and Year 13 face the pressure of crucial exams. Parents play a crucial role in supporting their children during these important years. It is important to encourage and guide them while also trusting in the School’s expertise to help them navigate these challenges effectively. By working together, we can ensure that your child is supported both at home and in School, allowing them to thrive academically and personally. Maintaining a healthy balance is paramount, and parents can support their children by ensuring they are not entirely consumed by their studies. Encouraging activities outside of school, such as exercise, music, or socialising, helps to maintain this balance.

Perspective and Support

For pupils who put immense pressure on themselves, it is important to keep perspective. Achieving top grades is not the sole measure of success, and pupils should be reminded of their accomplishments in other areas, such as sports, drama, or charitable work. Open communication between parents and the school is crucial in managing these anxieties, ensuring that pupils feel supported and understood.

A New Chapter Beckons

The new academic year brings a sense of renewal. Surbiton High School remains steadfast in its commitment to pupil success, with a dedicated and supportive faculty ready to help pupils achieve their best. Each new School year presents an opportunity to turn over a new leaf, reset, and break new ground, with the School and its teachers supporting pupils every step of the way.
