Monday 24 June 2024 saw the annual Surbiton High Senior School Sports Day take place. With the sun out gloriously shining, the excitement among pupils and staff was palpable!
Dressed in their House colours and carrying colourful banners to cheer on their teammates, our pupils were ready to take part in a range of track and field events as well as House events like the ever-popular tug-o-war! And, always a huge highlight, our fantastic teachers and support staff took to the track for the staff relay race.
Competition was fierce but good sportsmanship also remained integral to the day, with pupils waiting at the finish line cheering on, and encouraging, their fellow athletes whenever they were not competing themselves.
As always, there were some phenomenal performances, and this year was no exception. One of the closest fought competitions this year took place in the High Jump event. Ellina P broke the High Jump record before Amelia R, the previously current record-holder, broke the record again with a fantastic jump of 1.61m. Well done to both pupils for truly excellent performances!
This year also saw the debut of our new Sports Day medal, designed and created in-house by our own Design and Technology department, which made finishing in the top three just that extra bit more memorable. Medals were presented to each medallist by our Principal, Mrs Glover, and Assistant Principal, Mr Murphy. Overall, everyone really is a winner at Sports Day as all those who take part win House points that go towards the overall prize at the end of the term.
In an Olympic year, it is always special to help everyone experience what it could be like to take part in this incredible event; our Sports Day felt very much like the real deal.
