On Wednesday 21 September, we took two U10 football teams over to our neighbours at Twickenham Prep to play in their annual football tournament. After a good start to the season, confidence was high and the boys were excited about the challenge ahead. The B-team had a tremendous start to the afternoon, beating St Phillip’s (2-0) and Bishopsgate (1-0) before a narrow 2-1 win over Eton End’s A-team. The boys were buoyed after this excellent start and with Mr Buckingham rallying the troops, they were ready for the crunch game against Hampton Prep B-team. A seesaw battle saw one side then the other have chances. Eventually, a quick break away saw Surbiton High School score with one minute left; the referee blew his whistle and the team had won 1-0! With one game to go, the team knew that another victory, over Twickenham Prep B-team, would see the squad victorious. This proved to be the case as some excellent team play saw us prevail 2-0 and tournament winners!
The A-team faced similar opposition in what was to be a tight competition. A close encounter against our hosts kicked off proceedings, in which neither team could score a goal. A solid 0-0 game to start with, but we knew we had to take more shots! Our second game pitted us against a well-drilled Bishopsgate outfit. Two quickfire goals in the second half saw Surbiton High School prevail 2-0. This was swiftly followed by another 2-0 victory over a determined St Phillip’s outfit. Once again, it was our old friends from Hampton Prep which stood in our way of a second success of the day. A close encounter saw Hampton Prep hit the bar followed by two good chances for Surbiton High School. Eventually, an excellent team goal saw us take the lead; one which they would not relinquish! A second successful victory of the day!
Well done to both squads on what was a momentous day for Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory School football!
