Headline congratulations are due to front page star Elena who has been announced as winner of the NewsQuest Guardian Young Reporters Scheme. Young Reporters is an independent real life journalism experience in which students work independently and, under their own initiative, must conceive, research, interview, photograph, and write eight articles over a seven month period. It demands commitment, dedication, perseverance, self-discipline and organisation.  On top of that it requires talent as a writer and an eye for a story. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity open to students aged between 14 and 18, it enables them to try their hands at writing for a real newspaper and every article written is published online.

This year around 500 students took part.  The programme spreads throughout the Greater London area and the Home Counties, encompassing all schools within or just outside the M25. The scheme has been running for nine years and Elena extends Surbiton’s line of several winners over that period.

As part of the prize Elena will attend the under-graduate day at Kingston University Saturday 27 May. During the day she will experience what it is like to work on a real newspaper and her articles, alongside other winners, will be published in the London Comet.

The Award Ceremony will take place at NewsQuest’s headquarters on Thursday 29 June when they will reveal which category Elena has won.
