Drama

At Surbiton High School, the Drama department strive to unlock and nourish students’ potential in the Performing Arts by providing them with a wide and stimulating curriculum, which is complemented by our diverse co-curricular programme.

Our department’s philosophy states that Drama teaching should nurture the development of each student, whilst ensuring pupils acquire the skills and knowledge base of drama, theatre and cross-curricular topics explored (both practically and theoretically) through the medium of Drama. This nurturing comes from encouraging, challenging, stimulating, positive teaching strategies, which provide the safety and opportunity for the development, the learning, the understanding, and the growth of each individual. When students reach GCSE and A-level, this develops further to enabling them to develop as practitioners in their own right, through stimulating them with exciting material and training them with the necessary skills and theory to achieve in their examinations.

School Musical

The School musical is cast in the Summer term, so auditions for this year's performance of 'Grease' are now closed. However, there are still lots of ways to get involved. Look out for the programme design competition, set and costume design clubs, as well as opportunities for those interested in stage management, marketing and even journalism. The performances take place at the Rose Theatre, Kingston, so this is an excellent opportunity to get some experience of working in a professional theatre. Drama Scholars' Club

Drama Scholars' Club is a compulsory club for all Drama scholars. This is a chance for our KS3 and Sixth Form scholars to meet regularly to plan performances, have their say on how to make changes and improvements in the Drama department and further develop their skills and understanding of Drama. This year, scholars will undertake a new project based on 'Game Theatre' - as we delve into our favourite board games, we decipher our decision making process and unlock the hidden stories intrinsically weaved into these games. Using participatory theatre techniques to immerse an audience into our imaginative world, these workshops seek to explore a new way of devising theatre and to broaden our creative approaches to performance style.
