Reception at the Boys' Preparatory School

Click on a question below to reveal the answer:

When can we visit the School?

We hold Open Events throughout the year to welcome prospective parents and their sons to the School. Open events last approximately one and a half hours and include a presentation by the Head, an opportunity to tour the School with our Year 6 boys and to talk with our staff over refreshments. If you are unable to attend an Open Event, we would be delighted to arrange an individual tour of the School. To attend an Open Event, or arrange a tour, please contact the Admissions Office on 020 8439 1309 or admissions@surbitonhigh.com.

When and how should we apply for a place?

Please complete the online Application Form by 1 November the year before entry. There is a non-returnable application fee of £100. Your son will then be invited to attend the assessment in the November before entry. We may contact your son’s current nursery or pre-school to request a confidential report.

How many places are available?

There are usually two forms in Reception with up to 22 boys per form.

Do you have a catchment area?

Surbiton High School has a wide catchment area. Offers of places are made on the results of the assessment.

When is the entrance assessment?

The entrance assessment is held each year in November. For 2018 entry the assessment will be on Saturday 18 November 2017. If your son is ill on the day of the assessment, we may be able to arrange an alternative date for him to sit the assessment.

Where is the entrance assessment held?

The assessment is held at Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory School, in the Reception classroom.

What does the Entrance Assessment involve?

Boys are grouped according to their birthdays, e.g. Autumn, Spring and Summer birthdays in separate groups, as we are aware of the difference in development that a few months can make at this age. This method allows us to ensure that the boys will be assessed together with others of a similar age and developmental stage. The boys are observed by several members of staff as they do simple tasks that include number and sound recognition, broadly the type they have been used to at nursery. We do this in a very child-friendly way with stories, toys and play equipment. Reception assessments take about 40 minutes. During this time the Head will be on hand to talk to parents over refreshments.

What support is available to help my son settle in?

We invite all Reception joiners to a New Pupil and Parent Day in the Summer term before entry, to meet their Form Teacher and other boys in their form. Boys also meet with their Year 6 buddies. At the same time, parents are invited to a meeting with staff to go through any questions they may have prior to their sons starting with us in September.

Do you have a sibling policy?

We welcome applications from siblings of children who already attend the School. However, places are allocated on merit only.

Do you have places available in other year groups?

The main point of entry to the School is at Reception (4+). We sometimes have places available in other year groups each year, and these may be available part way through an academic year. Please contact the Admissions Office on 020 8439 1309 or admissions@surbitonhigh.com to discuss your requirements.
