Reception at the Girls' Preparatory School

Click on a question below to reveal the answer:

When can we visit the School?

We hold Open Events throughout the year to welcome prospective parents and their daughters to the School. Open events last approximately one and a half hours and include a presentation by the Head, an opportunity to tour the School with our Year 6 girls and to talk with our staff over refreshments. If you are unable to attend an Open Event, we would be delighted to arrange an individual tour of the School. To attend an Open Morning, or arrange a tour, please contact the Admissions Office on 020 8439 1309 or admissions@surbitonhigh.com.

When and how should we apply for a place?

Please complete the online Application Form by 1 November the year before entry. There is a non-returnable application fee of £100. Your daughter will then be invited to attend the assessment in the November before entry. We may contact your daughter’s current nursery or pre-school to request a confidential report.

How many places are available?

There are usually two forms in Reception, each with approximately 22 girls.

Do you have a catchment area?

Surbiton High School has a wide catchment area. Offers of places are made on the results of the assessment.

When is the entrance assessment?

The entrance assessment is held each year in November. For 2018 entry the assessment will be held on Saturday 11 November 2017. If your daughter is ill on the day of the assessment, we will be able to arrange an alternative date for her to sit the assessment.

Where is the entrance assessment held?

The assessment is held at Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School in the Reception classrooms.

What does the entrance assessment involve?

Girls are grouped according to their birthdays, e.g. Autumn, Spring and Summer birthdays in separate groups, as we are aware of the difference in development that a few months can make at an early age. This method allows us to ensure that the girls will be assessed together with others of a similar age and developmental stage. The girls are observed by several members of staff as they do simple tasks that include number and sound recognition, broadly the type they have been used to at nursery. We do this in a very child-friendly way with stories, toys and play equipment. Reception assessments take about 40 minutes. During this time the Head will be on hand to talk to parents over refreshments.

What support is available to help my daughter settle in?

We invite all Reception joiners to an introductory morning in the Summer term before entry, where they will meet their Form Teacher and other girls in their form. Girls also meet with their Year 6 buddies. At the same time, parents are invited to a meeting with staff to go over a few housekeeping points prior to their daughters starting with us in September.

Do you have a sibling policy?

We welcome applications from siblings of children who already attend the School. However, places are allocated on merit.

Do you have places available in other year groups?

The main points of entry to the School are Reception (4+) and Year 3 (7+). We sometimes have places available in other year groups each year and these may be available part way through an academic year. Please contact the Admissions Office on 020 8439 1309 or admissions@surbitonhigh.com to discuss your requirements.
