Charities

Throughout the academic year, pupils and staff actively participate in a variety of different fund and awareness raising activities. These events exemplify the Surbiton High School motto – Amor Nos Semper Ducat – May Love Always Lead Us. Each event provides an opportunity for pupils to develop leadership, communication and organisational skills, leading towards an ethos of service, community and respect. Over the last three years, the School has raised in excess of £150,000 for local, national and international organisations.

Each School House nominates a local charity which forms the focus of their fundraising activities throughout the academic year. Alongside these charities, the School supports a variety of different national and international organisations. We have a five year agreement with Free the Children, focussed on an Ecuadorian village, providing materials for school house construction, clean water pumps, agricultural techniques, medicines and business awareness. We take part in national campaigns like Red Nose Day and Sport Relief, as well as annual fund raising efforts for World Book Day and Jeans for Genes day. Pupils across the Senior School, Boys’ and Girls’ Preparatory Schools all enjoy mufti days. These six non-uniform days raise both funds and awareness for local and national charities. The £1 pledge made by each pupil goes towards local causes such as Kingston’s Churches Against Homelessness.

There is a full calendar of events so that pupils from Reception to Year 13 can take part across the School year. The main even in this calendar is the Surbiton High School Fashion Show. Over the past four years the School has had major themes linked to curriculum subjects; 2015 – Classics on the Catwalk, 2014 – Surbiton Goes Global, 2013 – Surbiton through the Decades, 2012 – Olympic Surbiton. The theme for the 2016 show is based on the subjects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). These shows see over 450 pupils and 30 staff perform over two nights, raising in excess of £10,000. The primary beneficiary of the Fashion Show is Full Circle Fund. The Fund supports children and families that suffer with life-limiting blood disorders. The funds have enabled the charity to employ more nurses and for families to receive support meetings. Other regular calendared events are MacMillan Coffee morning, Fabulous Friday Cake Sales, and the ever more successful Hockathon. This event raised £9,000 for Sands, a charity that supports families that have had a neonatal death or still births, and Ready, a charity that supports para-athletics. The monies raised have purchased a new blade for a GB parathlete, ready for the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Friendship Hour provides the elderly community of Surbiton and Kingston with a weekly opportunity to have tea, conversation and cake. The regulars often hold mini parties for Easter, Christmas and milestone birthdays. The pupils who lead on this programme gain an enormous sense of wellbeing and insight from the elderly community. Friendship Hour, recycling club, Free the Children, and Wings of Hope all provide pupils with an opportunity to Step up and Serve, an initiative launched and spearheaded by HRH Prince Charles.

The six House charities are selected by the pupils and staff in each House through hustings and voting at the beginning of the September term. These six charities are all local, and have a significant impact in the local community. The culmination of the House Charity work is in the Raise and Give (RAG) week during the Summer term. This week affords the pupils in each House an opportunity to develop different, fun activities that the Whole School can enjoy, as well as providing a platform for each of the six charities to publicise their work during the May Fair.

The House, Charity and Social Enterprise strands at Surbiton High School combine together to give a powerful opportunity for pupils to see and experience meaning in what they do, and impact through the monies raised. In addition, the skills developed in these activities provide pupil leaders with transferrable, marketable abilities that are desirable for both Universities and future employers.
