The library at Surbiton High School provides Sixth Form students with the ideal independent learning and study environment. We provide both print and online resources to not only meet immediate curricular needs, but also provide opportunities for further reading and research, helping students to broaden their knowledge and development.
The library is open at the following times, including break and lunchtimes:
Monday to Thursday: 8.00am—5.00pm
We house an extensive selection of print resources as well as books and we have a range of academic journals and periodicals to supplement the A-level syllabus. We also subscribe to a range of online resources such as Britannica Online, JSTOR and CREDO Reference, ensuring our students are able to access high-quality information. Accessing such information is crucial for A-level students and helps prepare them for the increasingly sophisticated academic resources they will be required to use at University.
To help drive independent learning in the Sixth Form, we contribute to the taught programme of the Extended Project Qualification, providing resources and study guides that develop students’ lifelong learning skills. We also provide and update subject reading guides, facilitating opportunities for students to read around their subject, and deepen their understanding of individual topics.
The library plays an integral role in supporting reading for pleasure in the School and this continues into the Sixth Form. We produce and regularly update Recommended Reading guides and the library also hosts the School’s weekly ‘Lit Soc’, which aims to foster a lifelong love of literature through a series of discussions, visits and talks, including some from external guest speakers.
