Rowing

Rowing at Surbiton High School is a very popular sport. We expect membership of the Boat Club to exceed 100 girls in the next two years. Rowing is offered as a Co-Curricular activity from Year 8 which will encompass complete beginners through to seniors. At Year 11, we encourage those who are capable to take part in GB Junior Rowing trials.

Why should girls row? Well, for a start, it is tremendous fun. Rowing is a rewarding, demanding and exciting sport that can be enjoyed on many levels from recreational to elite and is enjoyable at all ages in life. It is also an outdoor activity that will continue challenging the girls throughout their rowing career. Girls will learn many skills to help them through life which include discipline, comradeship, self-motivation, tolerance and a will to succeed within a true team sport.

Girls are moved up squads either by age group or when the coaches believe a girl is capable of joining the higher squad.

We compete regularly at 18 events throughout the year. From local Regattas and Heads to National events. We also run Easter training courses for Year 9 and above.

You may have heard that rowers train extremely hard and this is true, while working with the guidelines set out by British rowing. Rowing is one of the most professional amateur sports there is. However, that does not mean it is not enjoyable. At beginner level (J13) the emphasis is on fun and learning the basics. As girls move on in age and squad, the training increases for competitive performance.

The Boat Club has a very experienced and enthusiastic coaching team that have competed at every level of racing and coached at all levels up to World Championships.

Tennis

With tennis growing at Surbiton High School all the time, it has now become part of the Summer term curriculum, all pupils have the opportunity to play tennis during their PE lessons as well as an after school club for each year group.

Squad players play during their PE sessions all year round as well as early morning and after school sessions to give our strongest players as much time on court as possible to remain competitive. At the beginning of each academic year any pupil who would like to be part of the squad can come along for an assessment.

The expectations of squad players is also growing, with places remaining very competitive. All squad players are expected to have and improve upon an LTA rating by training and competing outside of School. Squad places will go to those with the highest LTA ratings and are competing as much as possible externally. We are able to monitor their progress online to see how they are progressing.

Session times and venues are by invite only from September with the summer programme being released at a later date.

Hope to see you out on court soon!

Surbiton High School is very proud of its reputation as being the largest and most successful school ski club in the UK. We train weekly on plastic and half termly on artificial snow. Our objective as a club is to provide any pupil at Surbiton High School with the opportunity to try ski training and racing and to provide a platform from which students are able to develop into good skiers and to introduce our members to ski racing.

  • Offers year-round skiing on an artificial surface with extra sessions at the Snowdome
  • Children from Year 2 to Year 13 are welcome, mixing and training with others in the School
  • Club members range from intermediate skiers to international performers / competitors
  • Is a great opportunity for parents and pupils from the three parts of the School to mix, meet up and work together

Trampolining

Trampolining is a fun and exhilarating sport suitable for all pupils of any age, shape or ability. We have well-qualified coaches who will be able to teach you even if you have never been on a trampoline before, to the serious competitive trampolinist.

We never pressurise you into doing anything you don’t want to do and there is always a very friendly atmosphere at the club.
