English

Here at Surbiton High School, English is our passion and privilege.

Our 14 subject specialists have a wealth of knowledge, expertise, energy and enthusiasm with which to inspire our young charges through literature, language, linguistics, speaking and creative writing. Our philosophy is to stimulate, both inside and outside the classroom. Our lessons fizz with the kind of intellectual and emotional engagement you would expect. We are bang up to date with the latest digital teaching technology and use it wisely, but a lesson might just as well be spent simply debating some of the big questions, such as 'what makes a literary classic?'

The classroom is very much the springboard into independent learning, which takes place through our vast range of Co-curricular activities. These include: debating, our annual Reading Challenge, poetry recitals, Young Journalist Scheme, numerous nationwide competitions, very active creative writing and book clubs and the High Times Magazine, to name but a few. We don't teach 'texts' - we foster a love of reading, writing and public speaking which will equip our pupils with the skills and understanding to appreciate Literature and Language for the rest of their lives.
