Curriculum

At Surbiton, we offer a bespoke curriculum that goes far beyond the National Curriculum.

Our curriculum is enhanced and enriched to develop learning beyond the core curriculum, providing every pupil with the opportunity to reach her potential. We believe in a child-centred education, valuing each child’s own interests and learning styles. We provide an education which encourages independence and autonomy, supporting children in using their initiative; an education that looks beyond subject disciplines and conventions.

Lessons are stimulating and meaningful and girls are provided with continuous opportunities to develop skills for learning and skills for life. We see learning as a partnership between home and School and workshops for parents are held at key stages of your daughter’s education. In the Reception class, parents learn about the importance of picture books and practical activities as the building blocks to reading and mathematics. Further workshops in Year 3 and again in Year 5 outline the methods taught at Surbiton and parents always comment on how much they value these sessions.

Our teachers are outstanding practitioners – their sole aim is to bring out the best in every girl they teach. Girls in our Reception class and Years 1 and 2 are taught predominantly by their class teacher. There is specialist teaching throughout the School for Music, Modern Foreign Languages and Physical Education and all classes are supported by a qualified Teaching Assistant.

As girls progress through the School, further subject specialism is introduced in Mathematics, English and Science. Girls in Years 3 – 6 are taught in ability groups for Mathematics. There is a class for girls who work quickly and confidently and enjoy the extended challenge of Mathematics. There are two smaller classes of girls of mixed ability. These girls are given all the support they need to improve their confidence and performance and there is fluidity between the groups. There is a similar arrangement for comprehension classes.

If you came to the Girls' Prep at 8am any morning, you would be certain to see a small group lesson in action, be it Mathematics, English or Gymnastics!

Science is taught by a specialist teacher in our Science laboratory and girls enjoy a balance of Biology, Chemistry and Physics before specialising in the separate Sciences at senior level.

Our connected curriculum encompasses the foundation subjects of History, Geography and Religious Education. It is an ever-evolving curriculum, designed to meet the interests and challenge the inquisitiveness of the girls.
