Languages

With the advances in travel and technology, the world is becoming ever smaller and more accessible, which is why we feel it is important to help prepare our boys with the language development required to engage more globally. The boys are taught French from Reception, where they learn the fundamentals of the language through stories, songs, games, actions, art and counting. The emphasis is very much on developing a personal confidence with the language, enjoyment and a love to learn more.

From Year 3, we introduce Spanish alongside French, where the boys enjoy reading and speaking familiar phrases and begin to foster an awareness of cultural diversity. As the boys progress through the School, the focus turns to understanding how the language is formed by undertaking written and aural activities based on grammar and structure.

Every year the Prep hosts a magnificent 'French Breakfast', which involves all boys in the School singing French songs to their parents, whilst the Year 6 boys don bow ties and wait on the parents, serving delicious croissants and coffee.

We have recently introduced Mandarin into Year 4, alongside the European languages, in recognition that this language is widely spoken across the globe and in the business world. This exciting addition to our linguistic programme is delivered by specialist primary teachers from 'Dragons in Europe'. The lessons are fun and interactive and cover all the basic fundamentals of Chinese language and culture. It is expected that by the time the boys leave the Prep they will have gained their Common Entrance Level 1 – 11+ in Chinese Mandarin.
